Covington United Presbyterian Church, Pavilion, NY

Who are we looking for?

Covington United Presbyterian Church is seeking a full-time interim pastor while we search for a full-time permanent pastor.  We would like someone who has experience with interim ministry, is able to lead and guide us forward both spiritually and educationally, and who has the interpersonal skills to connect and develop relationships with people in a variety of ways, becoming a part of our church community.

We envision a pastor who is able to assist the Session in overseeing the life and ministries of the church and who is able to help us reclaim membership and reach out to others in a variety of ways.

We are searching for a full-time transitional/interim pastor who:

  • Will help us come to terms with our history – we have been blessed with a strong, rich history–and help us use those strengths which have brought us to this point as we move forward.
  • Will help us discover a new identity – one that works in conjunction with what we have done, but also pushes us forward, increasing our ability to reach out to others.
  • Will facilitate shifts of power – help new people take on roles of leadership based on their strengths and interests.
  • Will help strengthen our denominational relationships – help us find new ways to connect with each other as a congregation as well as with our community and the world-wide church.
  • Will help us build commitment to new leadership for a new future – help us create an environment that is both welcoming and enticing for a new pastor to partner with us.

Who are we?

Established in 1828, we are a small, rural, active congregation. While a majority of our membership is over the age of 50, we do have members and attendees of all ages. We are very community oriented and have a long history of mission outreach. We work well together and everyone is willing to share their time and talents in order to maintain strong worship, fellowship, educational, mission and outreach, and property management services. We care for each other and for the land around us, and we have a deep faith in our Lord – trusting Him to be our guiding hand.

Where are we?

Looking at a map, we are located at the curve in the road where Livingston, Genesee, and Wyoming Counties meet. We are in a rural, agricultural area approximately 45 minutes from downtown Rochester and 60 minutes from downtown Buffalo. We are in the township of Pavilion, halfway between Pavilion and York.

What is our vision?

Our community is God’s, full of grace and mercy. As loving neighbors, we are committed to working enthusiastically and creatively with all and for all, as we offer praise through music, and glorify the Word through worship and mission. We look to the future to grow as a church and further establish this bedrock for future generations. Using technology will provide greater opportunities to connect our ministry with our community.

What will the primary responsibilities be?

  • Lead Sunday worship, including children’s time (researching and writing sermons, communicating with music people, developing weekly bulletin, etc.)
  • Provide leadership and stability while we search for a permanent pastor
  • Administer the Sacraments (communion, baptism)
  • Officiate weddings and conduct funeral services as needed
  • Visit hospitalized and shut-in congregants
  • Moderate session meetings

  • Contribute and communicate with others to create bulletins and newsletters
  • Prepare and distribute mid-week message via email
  • Help create and/or lead special services (Christmas Eve, Easter Sunrise, etc.)
  • Participate in church fellowship activities and events

Other roles and responsibilities not included above will be covered by teams and committees consisting of Elders, Property Managers, Mission and Service Committee, Spirit Committee, Personnel Committee, Worship and Music Committee, Stewardship Committee, and the Christian Education Committee. For example, the coordination of ushers, greeters, communion preparation and service, and special worship music will be conducted by these committees.

What will the evaluation and compensation be?

  • The Pastor will file monthly reports with the Session on ministry accomplishments and activities.
  • The Pastor will meet with the Personnel Committee every 4 months for a mutual review.
  • The overall Covenantal Agreement will be made between the Session and Pastor. The Session has the final authority with regards to the pastoral relationship.
